Under 15s v Duckinfield 13th April 2003

The under 15s recorded their first win of the season at Duckinfield by the remarkable score of 82-0! The first thing to be said is that, having been on the end of scorelines from teams who had that extra pace, Manchester knew how Duckinfield felt, and it is to Duckinfield’s credit that they turned down the option of mixing the teams up and wanted to stay as they were despite the mounting scoreline. Tim Spier’s, their coach has a good bunch of lads there and we wish them all the best.

The difference between this performance and others this season is that when the opportunities came, they were taken. Tries were scored by putting the man into space and letting him use his pace to outflank the opposition rather than cutting back inside into trouble. Don’t let the fact that the backs scored all but one of the tries fool you though. The forwards created the platform and the excellent rucking created time and space for the scrum half to release all that pace waiting outside.

It is not appropriate to single out individuals – this was a win earned by all the boys that have worked so hard over the last two seasons. A squad of 17 turned out and, with the three or four known injuries, that provides the basis for this team to advance next year. Coach Liam Wordley will be kicking himself for missing this one – even if he did have to go all the way to Australia to miss it!

Under 15's Metrovicks 19th January 2003

The Under 15s showed a much-improved attitude and performance against Trafford MV on Sunday. Facing a side with four under 16s and on a very heavy pitch, the forwards played well, sticking to their game plan and taking the lead after an impressive drive, Chris Hyde touching down. Alex Coglan, taking over the duties in the absence of the usual kickers adding the conversion. (7-0). Trafford came back using their big forwards to batter at Manchester, but the defence held firm driving Trafford back up the field. After a period of energy sapping play, Trafford broke clear on the wing and scored, adding the conversion. (7-7). Undeterred, Manchester continued to force their way forward, but were held up by some stern defence from Trafford, until the pressure at last told and Andy Keyworth scored Alex Coglan again added the conversion. (14-7)

In the happy position of leading Manchester showed that there is some talent in the side by continuing to play the rugby. However, Trafford had some dangerous players, and, from a period of pressure they scored a good try (14-12). Both sides were finding it difficult on a heavy pitch and after a serious injury to Nick Jones, which required a stretcher; the referee blew for half time.

In the second half, the extra pace of the Trafford forwards began to tell and they scored from a breakaway to take the lead (14-17). Manchester knew though that this was a game they could win and continued to press. Despite a series of 5 metre scrums, they couldn't turn the pressure into points (my apologies for the cheesy prose!) and Trafford broke away to score again (14-22).

Pleasingly, the heads didn't drop and Manchester came back to score a fine try through Andy Robinson. (19-22). This really was now "game on" and both sides recognised that, if they could drag their limbs through the mud, they could win this game. Manchester pressed and pressed, coming as close as 5 cm (yes, that's centimetres) from scoring the winning try. However, it wasn't to be and after an interminable amount of added time (the referee stopped his watch and forgot to restart it!!), Trafford scored another breakaway try to seal the win. (19-29).

A thoroughly enjoyable match in thoroughly awful conditions. It suggests that the tour should be in the swamps of Borneo rather than a sunny clime!

All in all, a good performance and really something for Liam to build on, (a shame he was skiving at Rotherham on the day!)

Next week, Ormskirk at home, meet 10-15am.

p.s. Fortunately, Nick's injury wasn't as bad as at first seemed and he should be fit for next week.

Cheers
