Silver Lining for Manchester at the EFE Finals Sunday 1st April 2007.
Lancashire RFU report
here      DE Photo website  here
In an outstanding day for Manchester at the EFE finals every finalist brought home the silverware with wins at U13, U14, U15 and U16. Those of us privileged to be there witnessed outstanding performances by all the Manchester sides both on and off the pitch. The boys arrived smartly turned out, played high quality handling rugby against good opposition who could not handle Manchester’s determination on the day. I was delighted to have 4 teams reach the finals but to win all 4 of them was a bonus I never expected in my wildest dreams.
My thanks go to the players coaches and parents of all the teams concerned. It was a hard slog getting to these finals through initial leagues and a tough knockout stages well done to you all. As the day progressed it was a delight to see the increasing support for Manchester as each age group finishing their finals stayed on to support the club in subsequent finals.
I do not believe we have ever had 4 age groups all reach their finals and certainly not win them. This was a great day for the club. As someone said in a very happy clubhouse on Sunday night we’ll need a bigger trophy cabinet.

Many thanks to Land Rover for their generous sponsorship of our Mini Rugby Festival this year. I believe it to have been a success not only for us but also for Land Rover and their public relations company FastTrack. I hope they will both continue to be a dominant feature in sponsoring Mini & Junior Rugby Festivals throughout the coming seasons across the United Kingdom and beyond. Very professional and accommodating companies to deal with. Thanks once again.

Land Rover - Sponsors of Manchester Mini & Junior Rugby Festivals 2006
Land Rover are delighted to be the title sponsors of this year’s Manchester Mini Rugby Festival on Sunday 8th October 2006. Representatives of Guy Salmon Land Rover Stockport will be at the festival showcasing their full range of vehicles, including the seven seater Discovery 3, whilst offering all supporters the chance to win some superb prizes. All the prizes and medals are going to be handed out by Andy Titterrell, the Sale Sharks and England hooker on the day.

As the official vehicle of England Rugby and Premier Rugby, Land Rover will be giving parents the unique chance to win a coaching clinic from their main rugby ambassador, Josh Lewsey. Their child’s team will be coached by the British Lions and England star at a location of their choice as he passes on the skills that he has acquired from some of the finest coaches in the world. To add to this fantastic prize the whole team will receive an exclusive set of Land Rover rugby kit.

Also on offer at the festival will be a 2006-07 Sale Sharks signed shirt and the chance to go off-roading at a local Land Rover Experience Centre. Two places at a Sale Sharks Premiership Rugby Academy camp will also be up for grabs. All supporters need to do is head for the Land Rover display or approach one of the Land Rover staff around the ground and complete one of the forms. The lucky winners will be announced at 3.00pm.

The Manchester Mini Rugby Festival is the first of several festivals around the country that Land Rover will be supporting this season. As part of Land Rover’s continued sponsorship within rugby, all twelve Guinness Premiership clubs receive a Discovery 3 to support their work in the community. Grassroots rugby remains a particular focus for Land Rover as it strives to not only to support the top echelons of the sport, but also provide funds to support its future development. The Premiership Rugby Academy is a major new initiative supported by Land Rover where kids are coached at camps by top coaches from the Guinness Premiership clubs. for more information please visit www.rugbycamps.com.

To arrange a test drive with Guy Salmon Stockport please call 0161 474 7799 or visit www.guysalmon.stockport.landrover.co.uk

Transfer of the MRC/RFU CCC (Club Coaching Coordinator) As always intended, Alec Moores is standing down after the inaugural year of CCC's for the RFU & Manchester RFC and is pleased to handover to Stu Giles, U13's coach. We wish him every success and thank Alec for his contributions in this key liaison role which he has filled to the great benefit of the club. I know from discussions with others in Lancashire how much his contribution has been recognised. Alec will be continuing his many and varied other contributions to the Section for which I on behalf of all of us thank him.

April 23rd Congratulations to the U7's & U12's in winning the Wilmslow Tournament this weekend. Well done! Same again next weekend at Rochdale?

April - Scrummy, aka Tom Bamford
Working with these players over the years you develop a close bond. We were all shocked by the injury in training at Kings Macc to Tom Bamford known to us all as scrummy. Tom clashed heads with another player as they bent to pick up a ball. He was a very promising player having had a fantastic season. The accident happened a month ago 2 weeks of which he spent on a life support machine in intensive care. He is now in a recovery ward and making progress. We go to visit him and the team have taken him a signed shirt. We will continue to support him as he slowly relearns his motor actions and help him  recover his memory. The support we have had from other Colts teams has been both touching and a great boost to these young players who like scrummy have their whole lives ahead of them. Scrummy is never out of our thoughts.

Important Notice to ALL Players, Coaches, Parents & Spectators -
"Please, can we with immediate effect stop as coaches and parents questioning the referee’s decision in matches whether friendly or otherwise. The referee probably has a better view of the game and what took place than we have and t
hese individuals referee on a voluntary basis for the love of the game. Without referees there would be no game. The link here  takes you to the RFU's decision on the recent U16's Ormskirk and Sedgley Park game and the dire consequences they will suffer.

If we do not respect the referee on the line as adults, how can we expect the players to do so on the pitch?. One of the things rugby teaches is respect for others and their contribution."

Iain Stewart
Chairman, Mini & Junior Sections

Saturday 25th March - Just a reminder that the next main MRC Tour 2006 to France  "fund raising do" is this coming Saturday from 8-00pm. Tickets are available ( £5 each ) from your individual Team Captain and from behind the bar. Please make sure you support the night and bring as many other people along as you can.
The last do before Xmas had 186 people there and was a great night. We also took some much needed revenue over the bar. There will be a live band playing in addition to the disco until Dorris decides to shut the bar. Thanks, KP.

Sunday 19th March - Minis & Juniors -  Directions to Lymm  here

The Family Night Disco -  Raised over £530 for club funds. Many thanks to all the M&J, Colts, Coaches, parents & friends that supported it. Special thanks go to Alison Forrest-Hilton, Judith McPhee, Kim Green & Carol Sbaiti. Well done for a superbly organised event.

March 5th - Results - Congratulations to the U14 and U15s Teams who have reached the EFE CUP and Plate Semi final stages after closely fought matches against good opposition from Fleetwood and Aspull.

They will meet either Preston Grasshoppers or Blackburn at U14 in the Cup and Sedgley Park or West Park at U15 in the plate at Grove Park on Sunday 19th March to play for a position in the finals. The U13’s Cup run where they reached the top 8 in Lancashire regrettably came to an end against a very strong Vale of Lune side. Getting to the last 8 in the county is impressive guys there is always next year.

The Colts, winners of the Lancs & Cheshire League won a thrilling match 19:14 against strong opposition from Middlesborough. This puts them in the last 16 in England playing in the divisional semi final. Details to follow. See below for more Colts information.

Wednesday 15th March - Junior Colts Lancashire Cup Quarter Finals - MRC Colts v West Park, venue is Broughton Park. KO 19:00hrs. Support from all MRC members & players would be more than welcome. This is a team that is really going places! We now have England, Ireland & several county players sourced from this formidable pack and held together from the age of 13 by coaches;- Simon Ramsden-Smith & Hugh Magee, and a shed load of their parents in other supporting roles. Please come on down  to Broughton Park and lend your support. And then to celebrate a sure win ...Friday 26th May, see below.

Jonathan Sheard - As some of you will know Jonathan was taken ill on Sunday morning and admitted to hospital. I am very pleased  to say I spoke with Jonathan at home this morning. He is returning to hospital today for tests and will have to work on his recovery. I have told Jonathan that he must focus on his own health at present and not concern himself with Rugby. This places a lot of pressure on Stuart Wilson who also coaches U13s. This is the time when we all need to rally round to help Jonathan and U13s.

Iain Stewart

Under 12's Sponsored Walk - 3 Peaks Challenge for Dublin Tour Funds - Congratulations to the coaches and squad members in completing it's sponsored walk on Sunday 19th Feb. The "Three Peaks Challenge" was set by Neil and Stu, coaches of the U12's in an attempt to help raise funds for it's up and coming Dublin tour  which will have hopefully raised over £500. Photos and report here

Colts Results - In a hard fought match on Sunday Colts ground out a 19-8 win against a strong Sandbach side. This win secures Colts an unassailable 3 points  lead in Lancashire & Cheshire Junior Colts League A with one game to go against second place team Leigh on 26th February . As a result of this Manchester enter the National competition for the top 32 teams in England. Well done guys. Thank you to the many members of M&J who were there on Sunday to support Colts.

Sunday 19th - U12's 3 Peaks Challenge in aid of Dublin Tour Funds - start 9.30am Meet at the club - drive to Bollington and take on the Cheshire 3 peaks - White Nancy, Teggs Nose and Shuttlingslow - approx 10 Miles - bring packed lunch and warm and waterproof clothes - should finish at 2-3pm - Spike - if you want to join us and meet the team you're more than welcome.

Sunday 12th  - is a big day for Junior and Colts players based at Grove Park. The Colts play Sandbach in the Lancs & Cheshire League with a 12:30pm kickoff. Sandbach are a quality side but a win for Colts on Sunday redresses the loss they suffered to Sandbach away in the first game of the season and would mean Colts win League A. with a game in hand. If you like quick skilful rugby come and support Colts. Our best wishes go to Tom Rayner who has been called up for Ireland U18's & Irish Exiles this weekend and to Lewis Mackay who plays U14 for Lancashire against North Wales. Mini/Midi Stoke Fixture Map here
Saturday 11th  - sees the first team, after a great win away at Redruth last week,  host local rivals Waterloo followed by England’s International from 1600. Make a day of it and support your local and international team in the comfort of your club.

EFE Challenge - Manchester has achieved tremendous success in the EFE challenge with 3 out of 4 teams in the cup competition and an ever improving U15 side in the plate competition. The U15 were unlucky losers in a thrilling match against their eventual group winners Preston Grasshoppers last Sunday. As a result of winning their groups U13 and U14 are guaranteed home draws in the quarter finals. The draw for the quarter finals will be held at Preston on Thursday of this week; watch this space. The quarter finals are on Sunday 5th March. This achievement is a credit to the players, coaches and supporters at the club.

Thursday 13th January Congratulations -  Rory Price U16 fullback has already been selected for the North and has been invited to the final England selection at U16 from 9th to 13th February. This years U16 side  plays Italy and Wales with the A&B squads playing Wales  , France & Canada. I am sure you will join me in wishing Rory further success at the selection weekend.
On the cup front the U14s and U16s have qualified for the EFE Cup competition ranking both these sides in the top eight in the county . The U15s have by coming 3rd in their league secured home advantage in the plate competition.

Well done to all players and coaches in these age groups.

The U13s have a crunch game in their league against Liverpool Collegiate on Sunday 30th January. The maths are complex

This is one of the best seasons across the board for the Juniors please turn out and support the U13s on the 30th and lets get 3 sides in the cup.

Match Reports - by George! Our very own version of John Simpson the TV news reporter aka George Harris from the U8-9's has started the season off with his usual poetic licence and humour from the war torn sidelines of the rugby pitch. Read his latest match reports here .... Littleborough report I'm sure there are more budding Kate Adie's or John Simpson's out there in the other age groups. See bottom of this page for more information on getting you and your child's  name in print and on the web!

Referee? Referee! I'm sure we have all shouted it at some stage but ....played before? want to help out? can't commit to coaching or helping  every week?
Parents/Guardians male or female who would like to assist with our Mini & Junior Sections but, cannot commit to coaching full time but would be of great assistance if they could be called upon occasionally to referee our local matches after full training. Please Contact Iain Stewart to get the attached form signed off and the club will pay all the course costs. We look forward to you help.

Eat Kingsmill Bread and we swap for  Free Kit!
We are now registered to collect tokens from Kingsmill bread products and exchange for rugby kit. A collection box, bread shaped, is in the new club shop on the 1st team pitch and we have a limited number of discount vouchers to give away in exchange.

We still need "Press Officers" to report a few lines on all our teams matches to the local press. Scribble a few lines of your son/daughters match and mail it to the address below. So simple, and we get more publicity and countywide exposure, and maybe future sponsorship for tours etc.  See note below

We will have contacts with all the regional press, Express/Advertiser MEN etc

The local press are very happy to give coverage to us but we have to tell them what happens! Each age group needs to appoint a parent/guardian to feed information to the press.
In order to make this easier, we have a self explanatory pro forma which is used to mail to Mike.Bradley@gmwn.co.uk by 12:00 on the Monday following the games with a copy to Info@Manchester-RugbyYouth.Com so that I can post to the website and the players can take pride in their achievements.
